Black husband and father here. I come in peace and offer you grace. When I first saw your fan art, I was off-put and angry. The fact that she was probably the most level-headed character on the show, for her to be drawn as a stereotypical single black mom felt like a slap in the face. It doesn't matter if it's canon or not. It's a negative stereotype much of society categorizes black women and we don't stand for that.

To a lot of the black community who grew up with Rugrats, Susie was one of the few black characters on TV that were positively portrayed. So to a lot of us, this felt personal. Just because Susie would be a strong-willed black woman, doesn't mean she wouldn't make a good wife. I'm married to one.

I get it. The post was 3 years ago and the harm was unintentional, but it's still harm. Black women are one of the most stereotyped and discriminated people on the planet in almost every facet of life, whether or not it's denied by the general public. The least our art can do is put them in a good light instead of shoving them into a negative stereotype. I started posting relationship comics with my wife on IG for that very reason.

So for anyone who has made it this far, supporting and defending the art, know that there is a pain behind it that black people feel about this. It's rooted in 402 years worth of slavery, then segregation and currently discrimination. Racism, racial bias and prejudice hasn't gone away and it's a reality that we have to deal with every single day, online and IRL. If we speak up, listen because you'll have a chance to understand why we feel what we feel. We can work together to make things better for the world as a whole. That's what art is supposed to do.
